Super Eagles Seek Redemption Against Russia After Guinea-Bissau Defeat

Super Eagles striker Akor Adams has urged Nigeria to put the disappointing 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau behind them and focus on producing a better performance when they face Russia in an international friendly on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.

Nigeria suffered a heavy defeat against Guinea-Bissau in Bissau on September 29 during their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. The result came after the Super Eagles had started their qualification campaign with a 2-1 victory over Madagascar in Uyo.

Akor Adams Calls for a Response

Speaking ahead of the Russia friendly, Adams acknowledged that Nigeria did not perform at the level expected of the national team but said the players had accepted responsibility for what happened.

According to the forward, the team has already started working on the mistakes made against Guinea-Bissau and is determined to improve in its next game.

Adams stressed that playing for Nigeria comes with high expectations and that the players must consistently meet the standards associated with the Super Eagles.

The striker also said the team could not use factors such as the pitch, weather or other match circumstances as excuses for the defeat.

Super Eagles Look to Bounce Back Against Russia

The Russia friendly comes at an important time for Nigeria, following the disappointing result in Bissau.

The match will be played at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium on Tuesday, October 6. It will be the second meeting between Nigeria and Russia in 16 months. Their previous encounter in June 2025 ended in a 1-1 draw, with Tolu Arokodare scoring Nigeria’s equaliser.

For coach Éric Chelle, the friendly also provides an opportunity to assess some of the players in his squad and make adjustments ahead of Nigeria’s next competitive assignments.

Several Players Unavailable

Nigeria will, however, enter the game with several players unavailable.

Captain Wilfred Ndidi is among those ruled out, while other players have also withdrawn because of injuries, club restrictions and travel documentation issues. Reports indicate that only 18 players were available to Nigeria in Russia ahead of the match.

Despite the absences, the squad includes players such as Kelechi Iheanacho, Moses Simon, Akor Adams and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

The situation also gives some of the less-established players an opportunity to impress the coaching staff.

What the Russia Friendly Means for Nigeria

Although the match is a friendly and will not directly determine Nigeria’s AFCON qualification position, the game provides the Super Eagles with an opportunity to regain confidence.

The 3-0 loss to Guinea-Bissau exposed areas that Nigeria will need to improve, particularly in terms of consistency and the team’s response when faced with pressure.

A strong performance against Russia would not erase the earlier defeat, but it could give the players and supporters something positive to build on.

Adams has made it clear that the players understand what is expected of them. The next step is to show that response on the pitch.

Nigerians Will Be Watching

Football remains a major part of Nigerian sports culture, and the Super Eagles continue to attract significant attention from supporters across the country.

With the disappointment of the Guinea-Bissau defeat still fresh, many Nigerian fans will be watching to see whether the team can produce a more convincing performance against Russia.

For Adams and his teammates, the message is straightforward: learn from the setback, correct the mistakes and move forward.

The Super Eagles face Russia on Tuesday, October 6, at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.

The Russia friendly gives Nigeria a chance to respond after a difficult night in Bissau. Akor Adams believes the team has taken responsibility for the defeat and is already working on correcting its mistakes.

The result will be important for confidence, but perhaps even more important will be whether the Super Eagles show the discipline, determination and improved performance expected from them.
