Nollywood actress and filmmaker Adanma Luke has called out people who repeatedly add her to WhatsApp groups created to raise money for burials without first seeking her permission.
The actress expressed her frustration after revealing that she had been added to four different groups in a single day. According to her, most of the groups were created for burial-related contributions.
Adanma said the situation was particularly frustrating because she had recently buried her father and had personally informed people about the burial instead of creating a group to solicit contributions.
She explained that if she ever needs to create a group for such a purpose, she would prefer to personally reach out to people first and ask whether they are willing to participate.
The actress, however, took a humorous swipe at what she described as the unfairness surrounding some of these groups.
According to Adanma, people are quick to add her when money is being requested for burial arrangements, but somehow her number is missing when it is time for a “thanks for coming” group where money is allegedly shared among attendees.
Her complaint has since generated reactions from social media users, with some people relating to the situation while others debated whether people should seek permission before adding someone to contribution groups.
Adanma has now made her position clear, asking people to contact her before adding her to any WhatsApp group.
Her message has also sparked a wider conversation about the pressure surrounding social contributions in Nigerian society, where people are often expected to support friends, colleagues and acquaintances during weddings, burials, birthdays and other major occasions.
While contributing to someone’s important occasion can be a gesture of love and support, Adanma’s complaint highlights the importance of respecting people’s boundaries and financial circumstances.
