Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has claimed that United States President Donald Trump supports his plan to reintroduce a form of fuel subsidy in Nigeria if elected president in 2027.
Atiku made the claim while speaking about his proposed economic policies, insisting that his plan is aimed at reducing the financial pressure Nigerians are facing and making transportation and essential goods more affordable.
The former vice president has recently made the return of fuel subsidy a major part of his economic campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election. He has argued that rising petrol and transportation costs have contributed significantly to the hardship experienced by households and businesses.
According to Atiku, however, his proposal is not a return to the old subsidy system that was associated with fuel imports and alleged abuses. Instead, he has proposed what he describes as a targeted and controlled subsidy focused on domestic production.
Under the plan, qualifying Nigerian refineries would receive crude at preferential prices, subject to conditions on production, transparency and domestic supply. Atiku said the process would be monitored so that the benefit of the intervention would eventually reach consumers through lower fuel prices.
Atiku has also argued that every subsidised barrel should be traceable from the point of allocation through refining and eventual distribution to consumers. He said the government should know exactly how much the policy costs and what Nigerians receive in return.
The proposal has, however, faced strong opposition from the Tinubu administration, which argues that restoring fuel subsidy would reverse important reforms in Nigeria’s petroleum sector.
The Presidency has maintained that the removal of the subsidy has freed significant resources for the federal, state and local governments and that returning to the old system could create another major burden on public finances.
President Bola Tinubu has also criticised Atiku’s proposal, describing his plan to return subsidy as evidence of what he considers a lack of understanding of current economic realities.
The debate comes as the 2027 election approaches, with the cost of living, petrol prices, food prices and economic reforms expected to remain major campaign issues.
Atiku, who previously supported the removal of fuel subsidy during the 2023 election campaign period, now says his position has changed because of the economic realities facing Nigerians. He has insisted that his current proposal is designed to provide relief rather than recreate the old import-dependent subsidy arrangement.
The fuel subsidy debate is therefore likely to remain one of the major economic issues in the build-up to the 2027 presidential election, with Nigerians watching closely to see which approach can provide affordable energy without creating another unsustainable burden on government finances.
