Lightning Strike Claims Lives of Pregnant Woman, Nursing Mother and Child in Bauchi

Three people, including a pregnant woman and a nursing mother, have been killed by a lightning strike in Gambiri village, Bauchi Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

A resident, Abubakar Hussain, told Daily Trust on Thursday, August 20, 2026, that the victims were killed when lightning struck the room where they were staying at about 5:29 p.m. on Monday.

According to Hussain, the victims were buried at about 11 a.m. on Tuesday.

He identified the victims as Hauwa Juli, who gave birth seven days before the incident, and her daughter, Fatima.

Hussain added that the third victim, Habiba, was Hauwa Juli’s sister and was pregnant at the time of the incident.

He said Hauwa Juli’s newborn baby survived the lightning strike.

“One miraculous thing that happened is how Almighty Allah has protected the newborn baby of Hauwa Juli from the calamity,” Hussain said.

The incident reportedly caused shock and grief among residents, disrupting social and economic activities as the community mourned the victims.

The Bauchi State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, also confirmed the incident.

“Yes, it is true that a thunderstorm has killed three people in Gambiri village,” he said.
