Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal to leave club at end of season

Dani Carvajal will leave Real Madrid at the end of the season, bringing to a close a highly successful spell that established him as one of the most decorated players in the club’s history. The Spanish giants confirmed the defender’s departure in a statement released on Monday, May 18.

“Real Madrid wishes to express its gratitude and affection to one of the greatest legends of our club and world football,” the club said.

Carvajal, 34, made 450 appearances for Real Madrid and won 27 trophies during his time at the Santiago Bernabéu, including six UEFA Champions League titles and four La Liga crowns.

The defender came through Real Madrid’s La Fábrica academy before joining Bayer Leverkusen in 2012. He returned to Madrid a year later and went on to cement his place as one of the club’s most influential players for more than a decade.

Club president Florentino Pérez praised Carvajal’s impact and legacy at the club. “Carvajal is a legend and a symbol of Real Madrid and its academy,” Pérez said.

The defender had reportedly hoped to represent Spain at this summer’s FIFA World Cup, but injuries throughout the season have hampered his campaign. According to Spanish media reports, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente is not expected to include him in the squad for the tournament.

Carvajal is expected to play his final match for Real Madrid this weekend against Athletic Bilbao at the Santiago Bernabéu in La Liga. His departure comes at the end of another disappointing season for the club, with Real Madrid set to finish a second consecutive campaign without a major trophy.
