Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have attacked Gaya community in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State, killing a police inspector and seven civilians.
The attack reportedly occurred on Monday night, August 17, 2026, when the assailants invaded the community and set two houses ablaze.
Chairman of Hong Local Government Area, Aliyu Sa’ad, confirmed the incident to Punch on Tuesday.
Sa’ad said the attackers targeted two houses during the night attack, killing eight people, including a police officer and seven civilians.
“The attackers came on the night of Monday and launched a bloody attack on two houses, burnt the houses and killed one police officer and seven civilians during the attack,” he said.
Following the incident, the military, police, local hunters and other security personnel were deployed to the area to track down the attackers.
The spokesperson for the Adamawa State Police Command, Suleiman Nguroje, also confirmed the attack but said the number of casualties initially recovered was lower.
Nguroje said five bodies, comprising four civilians and a police inspector, had been recovered as of the time of his briefing.
“The report we received from the area is that on Monday night, dead bodies of five people were recovered, four civilians and an inspector of police, after the attackers left,” he said.
He added that security forces, including troops, police personnel, vigilantes and hunters, had been deployed to the area and were searching for the perpetrators.
The police spokesperson said the command would provide further details as more information emerged.
“If there is any new development concerning the attack, I will surely contact you for a detailed briefing,” Nguroje said.
