Iran executes man accused of sharing information with CIA, Mossad

Iran said on Monday that it had executed a man convicted of spying for Israel and the United States, the latest in a series of executions carried out amid tensions with the two countries.

“Erfan Shakourzadeh… was hanged for collaborating with the US intelligence service and the Mossad spy agency,” the judiciary’s Mizan Online website reported.

The report did not specify when he was executed or arrested, but said he worked at one of Iran’s “scientific organisations active in the satellite field.”

Iran has long faced accusations from Western countries that its satellite programme is being used to develop ballistic missile capabilities.

According to Mizan, Shakourzadeh had “knowingly and willingly” passed classified information to the CIA and Mossad.

Iran is the world’s second-highest user of the death penalty after China, according to rights groups.
