A young Nigerian woman, Aisha Toro, has died following her reported battle with depression.
A close friend, Basarakiya, confirmed the tragic news and announced that Aisha would be laid to rest on Wednesday, October 7, following a funeral prayer at Jumma’a Mosque, Senior Staff Quarters, BSADP, in Bauchi State.
Aisha had previously spoken openly about her mental health struggles and suicidal thoughts in posts on X.
Her posts became increasingly concerning from October 1, 2026, in the days leading up to her death.
On October 4 at 11:44 p.m., she wrote: “If I wake up I am going to be so mad.”
Two minutes later, she made another post, writing: “Sweet d3ath.”
In a heartbreaking tribute following her death, Basarakiya recalled the plans they had made to start over together.
“We had a plan to start over together, we said ‘fuck depression, we are starting over,’ house hunting and all, but you left me knowing fully well that no one can tolerate me more than you,” she wrote.
Following the announcement of Aisha’s death, Basarakiya faced criticism from some X users, who accused her of failing to recognise the severity of her friend’s struggles.
One user, Ummulkhaira, wrote: “rinkitay_ spent over a week posting that she was not okay. She wrote about wanting to end it, and still, nobody noticed. This is a wake-up call. Checking on your mutuals is not optional. A comment under the post. Send DM, a simple ‘are you okay?’ Most people who are that low leave the signs before they go. We just have to be willing to see them. May Allah forgive her shortcomings and be gentle with her.”
In response to the criticism, Basarakiya announced that she would be stepping away from X to grieve her friend privately.
“I’ll be deactivating my account for a while. I can’t keep exposing myself to some people’s vile and hurtful tweets when I’m already carrying a pain I can barely put into words. I lost my sweet girl, and a part of me went with her. I’m grieving her, missing her, and trying to learn how to exist in a world without her in it,” she wrote.
“I’m at the edge of snapping, and I know that’s not what my girl needs from me. Right now, I need to step away from all the noise, protect my heart, and give myself the space to grieve her the way she deserves. May your soul rest in perfect peace. You will never be forgotten.”
