Russia vs Nigeria: Super Eagles Seek Redemption After Shock Guinea-Bissau Defeat

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will return to action on Tuesday, October 6, as they face Russia in an international friendly at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.

For Nigeria, the match comes at an important time. The team is looking to put behind its disappointing 3–0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and finish the international window on a positive note.

Kick-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Nigerian time.

Nigeria Looking for a Response

Nigeria entered the latest international window with optimism after defeating Madagascar 2–1 in their opening AFCON 2027 qualifying match.

However, that confidence was quickly damaged by the heavy defeat to Guinea-Bissau.

The Super Eagles struggled to impose themselves during the game and eventually suffered a 3–0 loss, leaving supporters disappointed with the team’s performance.

The result has increased the pressure on head coach Éric Chelle, who will now want to see a much better performance against Russia.

Chelle has made it clear that the players are motivated to respond and give a better account of themselves against the Russians.

A Different Super Eagles Squad

One of the biggest talking points ahead of the friendly is the number of changes to Nigeria’s squad.

Several established players will not feature because of injuries, club restrictions and other issues.

Captain Wilfred Ndidi is among the players unavailable after picking up a knock during the Guinea-Bissau game. Nigeria’s squad has also been affected by other withdrawals, leaving Chelle with a much-changed group.

The situation, however, provides an opportunity for other players to show what they can offer.

Chelle has indicated that the Russia match will give some of the new faces a chance to prove themselves and compete for places in the national team.

Russia Will Provide a Serious Test

Russia should not be underestimated.

The Russian national team has been active in international friendlies and enters the game with confidence after a series of positive results.

That makes the fixture a useful test for a Nigerian side that needs to rebuild confidence.

The Super Eagles will need to improve their intensity, concentration and ability to keep possession if they want to avoid another disappointing result.

Chelle specifically highlighted the intensity of the Russian team and said he wants his players to show a similar level of aggression and commitment.

Another Chance for Kelechi Iheanacho

Kelechi Iheanacho is among the experienced players included for the Russia friendly.

His experience could prove valuable to a Nigerian team containing several less-established players.

The match could also provide an opportunity for other players to make an impression and convince the coach that they deserve more opportunities in future Super Eagles games.

Nigeria and Russia Meet Again

Tuesday’s encounter will not be the first meeting between both countries.

Nigeria and Russia previously played a friendly in June 2025, with the match ending in a 1–1 draw.

The latest meeting therefore gives both teams another opportunity to test themselves against each other.

What Nigeria Must Get Right

The Super Eagles will need to approach the game with a different mentality from the Guinea-Bissau defeat.

Nigeria must defend better, compete for second balls and show greater urgency when attacking.

The players also have an opportunity to restore some confidence among supporters following the disappointing AFCON qualifying result.

Although Tuesday’s match is a friendly, a convincing performance would provide a welcome boost for Chelle and his players.

Can the Super Eagles Bounce Back?

The Russia game presents Nigeria with a chance to turn the page.

A victory would not erase the disappointment of the Guinea-Bissau defeat, but it would give the team some momentum and allow the new players to gain valuable international experience.

For Chelle, the match is also an opportunity to assess the depth of his squad and discover which players can step up when some of the regular stars are unavailable.

The Super Eagles will therefore be hoping for a much-improved performance when they face Russia in Nizhny Novgorod.

All eyes will be on the Super Eagles as they look to respond to the Guinea-Bissau setback and give Nigerian football supporters something positive to cheer about.
