Flood Alert: FG Warns 33 States of Rising Water Levels, High Flood Risk

The Federal Government has issued a seven-day flood forecast, warning of a high risk of riverine flooding across 33 states between August 19 and 25, 2026.

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) said rising river levels are expected to trigger flooding in several locations during the period.

According to the agency, states at high risk include Kaduna, Niger, Taraba, Ondo, Oyo, Rivers, Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno and Cross River.

Others are Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Lagos, Ogun, Osun and Plateau.

NIHSA urged communities living on floodplains to relocate immediately to safer, higher ground to reduce the risk of loss of lives and property.

The agency also called on state and local governments in the affected areas to activate their early-warning systems and emergency response plans to mitigate the impact of possible flooding.
