Ugandan football has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of national team player and SC Villa captain David Owori, who reportedly died after suffering serious injuries during a violent robbery in Kampala.
Owori, 27, was attacked outside his home after suspected robbers allegedly attempted to steal his mobile phone. According to police, the footballer resisted the robbery before he was assaulted. Witnesses claimed the attackers used paving stones during the attack.
He was initially taken to a nearby medical facility before being transferred to a private hospital in Kampala for specialized treatment. Despite efforts by medical personnel, Owori succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, August 5.
In a statement, SC Villa described Owori’s death as a heartbreaking loss for both the club and the country. The club called on security agencies to carry out a thorough investigation and ensure those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.
The club also praised Owori’s leadership, professionalism, and commitment, saying he was not only an outstanding footballer but also a respected captain whose influence extended beyond the pitch. They noted that his dedication inspired teammates and supporters throughout his career.
SC Villa expressed its deepest condolences to Owori’s family, friends, teammates, and fans, praying that his soul rests in peace.
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) also paid tribute, describing Owori as “a true leader on and off the pitch” whose contributions to Ugandan football will not be forgotten.
During his career, Owori played professionally in Europe, featuring for Spanish club Vélez CF before moving to Sweden to join Utsiktens BK. He also proudly represented the Ugandan national team on the international stage.
Authorities are continuing investigations into the attack as the football community mourns the loss of one of Uganda’s most respected players.
