The United States walked out of a United Nations Security Council meeting on Monday after France’s ambassador began speaking, in protest against remarks that compared Washington’s human rights record to that of authoritarian governments.
Dan Negrea, a senior US delegation official and alternate representative to the UN General Assembly, criticized France’s comments as what he described as political posturing. He accused Paris of using the issue to deliver a moral lecture rather than engage in meaningful discussion.
“There is a member of this council that will repeatedly claim the high ground and criticize others on nearly every issue,” Negrea said during the session. He argued that France had turned the discussion into an opportunity for criticism unrelated to the meeting’s main focus, the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Negrea explained that the decision to leave the chamber was a direct response to France’s intervention, saying the United States would not participate in what he called a politicized attack.
The walkout was an unusual move at the Security Council, the UN’s most powerful body, where both France and the United States hold permanent seats and possess veto power.
The dispute followed a recent General Assembly vote in which the US opposed extending the mandate of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk. Washington was among 10 countries that voted against the extension, alongside nations including North Korea, Russia, and Nicaragua.
Following the vote, France’s mission to the United Nations in Geneva criticized the US position, arguing that Washington had damaged its reputation as a defender of human rights.
“The US used to be a beacon of human rights. Not anymore,” the French mission said in a statement, accusing the country of standing alongside governments widely criticized for rights abuses.
Responding to France’s remarks, Negrea defended America’s global role, saying the United States remains committed to protecting freedom and human rights around the world. He rejected France’s criticism as politically motivated and said Washington would not give attention to what he described as unfair accusations.
French Ambassador Jérôme Bonnafont later addressed the incident, highlighting the historic relationship between the two countries. He noted that 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the United States and recalled France’s role in supporting American independence.
Bonnafont said France remains committed to strengthening the United Nations and preserving its ability to promote peace, uphold human rights, and follow the principles established in the UN Charter.
The confrontation highlights growing tensions between longtime allies over how human rights issues should be addressed on the international stage, as both countries continue to debate the role of the United Nations in global affairs.
