French football legend Zinedine Zidane has officially taken charge of the France national team, returning to the international stage as the successor to Didier Deschamps.
Deschamps, who guided Les Bleus for 14 years and became the country’s longest-serving manager, stepped down after France’s semi-final defeat against Spain at the 2026 World Cup. His departure brought an end to one of the most successful managerial eras in French football history.
Zidane, a World Cup winner with France in 1998, had been away from coaching since leaving Real Madrid in 2021 after his second spell at the club. During his time in Madrid, he built a reputation as one of football’s elite managers, winning multiple major trophies, including three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles.
The 54-year-old has now agreed to lead France through the qualification campaign for the 2030 World Cup, taking charge of a squad widely regarded as one of the most talented in world football.
Speaking after his appointment, Zidane expressed his pride at becoming the manager of his country’s national team.
“There is nothing greater than the French national team,” Zidane said. “It is a huge honour and a great source of pride to take on this role.”
He also acknowledged the responsibility that comes with managing Les Bleus and paid tribute to Deschamps for his long service.
“I want to thank the French Football Federation for their trust and recognise the incredible work Didier and his staff have done over the past 14 years,” Zidane added. “I have great ambitions for this team and will give everything to help France succeed.”
French Football Federation president Philippe Diallo praised the appointment, describing Zidane as a historic figure in French football.
