Many residents of Kirawa, in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, have fled to neighbouring Cameroon after suspected Boko Haram terrorists killed several soldiers and abducted a schoolgirl identified as Aisha Muhammad.
The attack, which lasted for several hours, occurred on Saturday night, August 9, 2025.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, told Punch that many residents had abandoned their homes.
“Yes, we are aware of the attack that occurred on Saturday. However, details are still sketchy because many residents are yet to return after fleeing, so we cannot ascertain what happened to every individual at the moment,” the PPRO said.
Yakubu Mabba Ali Kirawa, Chairman of the Kirawa Development Association, also confirmed the incident. He explained that the terrorists burnt houses, shops, and vehicles during the assault.
“On Saturday, around 9:30 p.m., Boko Haram entered the town and exchanged gunfire with the Multi-National Joint Task Force stationed there. After the attack, they abducted a girl named Aisha Muhammad Aja and set fire to houses, vehicles, and shops.
Around 1 a.m., they left the town, prompting many of our people to flee to Cameroon. Some later returned, while others stayed overnight across the border. At present, the situation is relatively calm, and most people have come back to town and resumed their normal activities,” he said.
Kirawa called on the Federal Government to deploy more troops to the area to prevent further attacks.
“Being a border community where only a river separates us from Cameroon, we are requesting the Federal Government to establish a brigade and increase troop deployment to curb the porousness of the border,” he added.
Local sources confirmed that the abducted schoolgirl has yet to regain her freedom.
“They killed soldiers and kidnapped a junior secondary school girl,” one source said, noting that many families remain displaced, with some still taking refuge in villages across the Cameroonian border.
