“Why I Will Never Support Tinubu” — Dino Melaye Explains His Position

Former Nigerian senator Dino Melaye has outlined several reasons why he says he will “never” support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Melaye, a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), officially joined the party after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in July 2025. He had previously moved from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2015 before returning to the PDP ahead of the 2019 general elections.

In a post shared on Instagram, the former lawmaker listed 16 reasons for his position, criticising the Tinubu administration over fuel prices, electricity tariffs, food inflation, insecurity, unemployment and borrowing, among other issues.

Melaye claimed that the price of petrol had risen significantly since Tinubu assumed office, while Nigerians were also paying more for electricity despite persistent power challenges.

He also criticised the administration over the rising cost of food, transportation and other basic necessities, arguing that the economic hardship being experienced by Nigerians had worsened under the current government.

On insecurity, Melaye alleged that criminal activities, which he said were previously concentrated in certain parts of the country, had spread across several regions.

The former senator further faulted Tinubu over youth unemployment, saying the president had promised during his inauguration in May 2023 to reduce the rate of youth unemployment.

Melaye also questioned the government’s borrowing, arguing that Nigerians had yet to see sufficient results from the funds borrowed under the administration.

He went on to make allegations concerning the president’s political conduct, appointments, handling of institutions and relationships with certain individuals. He also accused Tinubu of ethnic bias and criticised his performance during international engagements.

Concluding his post, Melaye declared that he could not support Tinubu at the polls, insisting that the president had failed to meet expectations in several areas.

The claims made by Melaye represent his personal assessment of the Tinubu administration and include allegations that would require independent verification.
