Putin Faces Growing Pressure as Allies Reportedly Move to Dismantle His Power

New reports suggest that Russian President Vladimir Putin may be facing growing frustration from some of the country’s political and business figures as the war in Ukraine continues and economic challenges deepen.

According to reporting by The Sun, several influential Russians have made unusually candid remarks about the country’s current direction. While public criticism of the Kremlin remains rare, the report claims that concerns about the war’s long-term impact and Russia’s economic future are becoming harder to ignore.

Among those mentioned is German Gref, the chief executive of Russia’s largest bank and a former government official. The report says Gref argued that the conflict in Ukraine has placed a heavy burden on the Russian economy and called for the war to end. Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko was also cited as urging greater economic cooperation with Western countries and reportedly criticizing the concentration of political power.

Ukraine analyst Jason Smart told The Sun that many members of Russia’s elite are increasingly focused on protecting their wealth as uncertainty grows.

“They understand that Putin’s regime is on very shaky ground,” Smart said, adding that many wealthy Russians have reportedly moved billions of dollars overseas to shield their assets from potential instability.

The report also alleges that Putin has reduced his public appearances in recent months while security measures around his residences have been strengthened. It further claims that Russia’s National Guard has expanded its capabilities, including the addition of tank units. Smart suggested these developments could reflect concerns about possible internal unrest, although no official evidence has been presented to support that interpretation.

Russian political analyst and Kremlin critic Igor Eidman also told The Sun that dissatisfaction within sections of Russia’s establishment is growing. According to Eidman, some influential figures increasingly believe the war cannot be won and that Russia’s leadership needs to change course.

The report further claims that Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev recently encouraged Russia to consider freezing the conflict in Ukraine during talks with Putin. Tokayev reportedly suggested revisiting negotiations similar to the earlier Istanbul peace framework in hopes of finding a diplomatic solution.

Former UK Defence Attaché to Russia John Foreman told the newspaper that Tokayev’s comments may reflect a broader effort by Central Asian countries to maintain ties with Moscow while gradually pursuing more independent foreign policies.

Foreman argued that the war has reshaped the region’s geopolitical landscape, pointing to Ukraine’s continued resistance, NATO’s expansion, and what he described as a growing shift by several former Soviet states away from Russian influence. He also suggested that China has strengthened its strategic position in relation to Russia since the invasion began.

The report adds that countries including Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan have increasingly sought to diversify their international partnerships, potentially creating new opportunities for both China and the United States to expand their influence in Central Asia.
