The United States Mission in Nigeria has cautioned passport applicants against submitting photographs that have been altered with artificial intelligence (AI) or digital editing tools, warning that such images will not be accepted during the application process.
In a notice shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, July 31, the mission reminded applicants that passport photos must be authentic, up to date, and accurately represent their current appearance.
According to the embassy, applicants should avoid using AI-generated images, beauty filters, or any software that changes or enhances their facial features. Only unedited photographs that meet official passport photo requirements will be considered.
The mission also emphasized that passport photos must have been taken within the last six months. This requirement helps ensure that U.S. border and immigration officials can easily verify an applicant’s identity during travel.
Officials further noted that submitting digitally altered or AI-enhanced images could lead to delays in processing passport applications, as such photos may not meet the required standards.
To avoid unnecessary setbacks, applicants are encouraged to review the U.S. Department of State’s official passport photo guidelines before submitting their applications and ensure their photographs comply with all specifications.
