French football icon Zinedine Zidane has reportedly reached an agreement to become the next head coach of the France national team, with his proposed contract set to run until June 2030.
According to renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Zidane has already signed the deal and is expected to be officially presented as Didier Deschamps’ successor in the coming days. Romano shared the news on his social media platforms, saying Zidane’s return to the French setup is now confirmed.
“Zinedine Zidane has signed as the new France coach until June 2030. The story has been confirmed as Zizou will be unveiled as the new head coach in the next days — back to work with France,” Romano reported.
The former Real Madrid manager is expected to oversee France’s preparations for major upcoming competitions, including the 2027 UEFA Nations League, UEFA Euro 2028 and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Zidane, 54, has been away from coaching since leaving Real Madrid in 2021 after completing his second spell with the Spanish giants. His time at the Santiago Bernabéu was marked by historic success, as he guided Madrid to three straight UEFA Champions League titles from 2016 to 2018. He also won multiple domestic honours, including two La Liga trophies.
The move would represent a significant return to the French national team for Zidane, who remains one of the country’s greatest football figures. As a player, he played a starring role in France’s 1998 FIFA World Cup triumph, scoring twice in the final against Brazil to help Les Bleus secure their first-ever World Cup title.
Zidane has been repeatedly linked with the France coaching position and has previously spoken about his ambition to manage the national side one day. Current head coach Didier Deschamps, who has been in charge since 2012, is widely expected to leave his role after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
