Peter Obi has announced his intention to run for president in the 2027 general election, making it clear that he will not accept a vice-presidential role under any circumstance.
The former Anambra State governor made this known while speaking at a campaign event for African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidates contesting the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections. The event was held at the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
Addressing party supporters, Obi explained that his presence at the AMAC campaign was tied to his broader national political ambition. He urged residents and party members to rally behind the ADC candidate, stressing that victory at the grassroots level would strengthen his larger political vision.
According to him, his political involvement going forward would only be in a leadership capacity, not as a secondary figure on any ticket.
“Support us in AMAC; it will help me. Your support in AMAC is critical to our journey. I am involved and contesting the coming election as number one. When I come back, you will see. I assure you,” Obi said.
His declaration comes amid increasing pressure from his supporters, particularly members of the Obidient Movement, who have been calling on the ADC leadership to present him as the party’s presidential flagbearer for the 2027 election.
However, the ADC is also home to other high-profile politicians with presidential ambitions, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi—setting the stage for a potentially fierce internal contest ahead of the polls.
