The Edo State Police Command has rescued 11 of the 18 passengers who were kidnapped by gunmen on the Benin–Akure highway near Obarenren village in Ovia North East LGA on December 12.

The attackers reportedly forced the vehicle to stop at gunpoint, fired shots, and abducted the passengers into the bush.

Confirming the rescue to journalists, the police spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said the command received a distress call shortly after the incident and promptly deployed security operatives to the scene.

She added that the police, working alongside the army, local vigilantes, and hunters, conducted a bush-combing operation to track the kidnappers and secure the victims’ release.

“On Sunday, 11 of the kidnapped passengers were successfully rescued, while seven others remain in the custody of their abductors,” ASP Ikoedem said.

She assured that the police are doing everything possible to secure the release of the remaining victims and urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies. ASP Ikoedem expressed confidence that the remaining passengers would be rescued unharmed.
