A senior Russian general was killed in a car explosion on Friday morning in the city of Balashikha, near Moscow.

Yaroslav Moskalik, the deputy head of the Main Operations Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, died when a Volkswagen Golf detonated, according to a statement from Russia’s Investigative Committee.

The explosion was reportedly caused by an improvised explosive device packed with shrapnel, the committee added.

The Investigative Committee announced it has launched a criminal investigation into the incident. An investigative team, including forensic experts and law enforcement officers, has begun examining the scene in Balashikha, located less than 20 miles east of Moscow.

Earlier, Russian state news agency Tass reported that a homemade explosive device detonated in a car in the city, citing emergency services.

The reported blast on Friday occurred just two days after an explosion caused a fire in an underground parking garage in Moscow’s business district.
