Boy, 7, dies after inflatable bouncy castle is blown into air by strong winds

A seven-year-old boy has died after a bouncy castle was lifted into the air by strong winds during an event in Hamme, Belgium.

Jean Kylian Essombe, a young football enthusiast, was thrown across a field when a sudden gust of wind caused the inflatable structure he was on to become airborne. He struck a fence and sustained critical injuries.

Emergency services responded quickly and provided first aid at the scene before he was taken to AZ Sint-Blasius hospital and later transferred to UZ Gent for specialist treatment. Despite medical efforts, Jean died a few hours later. Three other children were also injured and taken to hospital for checks.

Jean had been attending a youth football tournament, the Youth Cup, on Saturday, May 9, where he was supporting his older brother, Louis, who plays for Wambeek-Ternat’s U10 team. Reports suggest Jean had also taken part earlier in the day in a separate match for a younger age group at the same club.

Authorities in East Flanders have launched an investigation into the incident, focusing on whether the bouncy castle was properly secured and whether all safety regulations were followed.

SK Wambeek-Ternat paid tribute to Jean, describing him as a talented and joyful young player.

The club said: “With deep sadness, we learned the news about Jean. It is hard to comprehend that someone so young and full of life has left us.

“Jeanke was not only a talented player, but above all a wonderful friend, always full of enthusiasm and with a smile on his face. We will never forget the joy he shared. Our thoughts are with his parents, his brother Louis, his family and friends at this difficult time.”

KFC Wambeek-Ternat, which has around 600 players, cancelled all weekend fixtures in his honour and said it would continue supporting the family and those affected.

Club chairman Jos Donvil described the incident as a tragic accident, saying: “We now have only one task, and that is to give the right support to the parents, trainers and family.”

He added: “His brother, who also plays with us, has lost his playmate.”

Neighbouring club FCV Dender EH Jeugd also expressed condolences, stating: “We would like to express our sincere condolences and heartfelt support after the tragic death of a young player from our football region. Our thoughts go out to his family, friends, teammates, trainers and everyone at KFC Wambeek Ternat, Next Youth Generation and VW Hamme. Wishing you lots of strength and warmth in this particularly difficult period.”
