Britney Spears has been sentenced to one year of probation following her arrest for driving under the influence.
The pop star pleaded guilty at her arraignment at Ventura County Superior Court on Monday, two months after she was arrested for DUI.
The 44-year-old singer, who recently completed a three-week rehab stint following her March 4 arrest, did not appear in court but entered her guilty plea through her lawyer, Michael Goldstein.
Spears was sentenced to 12 months’ probation and one day in jail, which she has already served. She was also ordered to enroll in a three-month alcohol and drug education program after accepting a plea deal in a DUI case known as a “wet reckless.”
The plea bargain allows a driver to plead guilty to reckless driving involving alcohol and/or drugs, a lesser charge that carries a significantly lighter sentence.
Such deals are typically reserved for defendants with no prior DUI history, a low blood alcohol level, no accident or injuries involved, and evidence of willingness to address underlying issues through rehabilitation or a substance abuse program.
Ventura County Superior Court Commissioner Matthew Nemerson also fined Spears $721 and ordered her to attend weekly psychological therapy sessions and see a psychiatrist twice a month.
He further instructed the singer not to consume alcohol or drugs, except for prescription medication, and ruled that police may search her vehicle without a warrant if she is stopped again.
