A newborn was on Saturday found at a refuse dump in Okaka area of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.
The infant, found by residents wrapped in Ankara fabric, however, died shortly after being rescued, due to hunger and cold as it drizzled early in the morning.
Meanwhile, the police in Ebonyi State also disclosed on Saturday that it rescued a nine-month-old baby after its case was brought to their notice by a farmer.
In Yenagoa, the spokesman for the Bayelsa State Police Command, Mr Asinim Butswat, confirmed the case of the abandoned infant, adding that the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area had visited the scene and contacted the sanitation authority to evacuate the corpse of the baby.
A resident, Mrs Abundance Jerry, condemned the act of abandoning babies, describing it as a wicked act.
She said, “I was in my house when I overheard some neighbours talking about the abandoned baby, so I came out to see it. Such an innocent child!
“As a mother, I know what it means to carry a child in the womb for nine months, and for the mother to throw away this baby like this is nothing but wickedness.”
The abandoned nine-month-old in Ebonyi was said to have been discovered at a riverside in Ezzilo community in the Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State on Friday.
It was gathered that the abandoned baby was discovered by a farmer who alerted the police.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mrs Loveth Odah, said in a statement on Saturday that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Aliyu Garba, had directed that adequate medical attention should be given to the baby.
“The CP assures the general public that the command will continue to collaborate with all the relevant government agencies and non-government organisations in fighting against this inhuman act and other social vices in Ebonyi State,” the PPRO said.
