French Court Hears Shocking Case of Husband Accused of Drugging Wife for Strangers

A woman’s world was “tilted on its axis” when she discovered that her former husband had allegedly drugged her for years and invited men into their family home to sexually assault her while she was restrained and blindfolded, a jury at Winchester Crown Court has heard.

Philip Young, 50, allegedly advertised his then-wife, Joanne Young, on dating and swinging websites, portraying the encounters as a shared sexual interest. However, prosecutors told the court that he had been secretly sedating her, leaving her incapacitated and vulnerable to sexual assaults by strangers.

Young has pleaded guilty to multiple offences against his former wife, who has waived her right to anonymity.

The trial involves four other men accused of sexually assaulting Joanne Young, 49. The jury, comprising eight men and four women, is hearing evidence concerning the alleged offences, which span several years.

Connor Sanderson-Doyle, 32, of Swindon, Wiltshire, denies charges of sexual assault by penetration and sexual touching relating to an alleged incident in June 2016.

Richard Wilkins, 62, of Toothill, Swindon, has pleaded not guilty to one count of rape and one count of assault by penetration relating to an alleged incident in July 2016.

Norman Macksoni, 48, of Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire, denies one count of rape relating to an alleged incident in February 2017.

Mohammed Hassan, 38, of Swindon, has pleaded not guilty to one count of sexual touching relating to an alleged incident in February 2023.

Philip Young is named in each of the charges as an alleged participant alongside the respective defendants.

Opening the prosecution’s case, Sarah Jones KC told jurors that Joanne Young had been unaware of the alleged abuse until police intervened at the family home in Swindon, Wiltshire.

Describing the profound impact of the revelations, Jones said:

“The world she thought she knew had entirely tilted on its axis. The relationship she thought she had appears now to be wholly unreal—she does not even know what she doesn’t know.”

The prosecutor warned the jury that the trial would involve distressing evidence, including video recordings allegedly showing Joanne Young incapacitated while men recruited online approached her and engaged in sexual acts.

Jones also highlighted a central question in the case: whether a person can reasonably assume that someone has consented to sexual activity without checking directly with them, or rely on another person’s claim that consent has been given.

Joanne Young and Philip Young married in 2004 and had three children together.

According to the prosecution, their family life appeared ordinary to outsiders. Joanne Young described the marriage as traditional and monogamous.

Although Philip Young reportedly had a preference for blindfolds and restraints during intimacy, his former wife did not object to those activities within their relationship. However, she was otherwise uncomfortable with losing control and disliked taking sleeping aids.

Prosecutors allege that Young exploited this trust by secretly administering sedatives and arranging encounters with other men without his wife’s knowledge or consent.

Investigations into Philip Young’s activities reportedly began years before the full extent of the alleged abuse became known.

In 2015, customs officials intercepted a package containing sedatives that had been sent from India to Young. Subsequent police inquiries uncovered evidence that he had searched for substances capable of causing severe disorientation and memory loss.

However, the allegations did not come fully to light until 2023, following a night out with her husband.

During an intimate encounter, Joanne Young reportedly felt an unfamiliar hand on her wrist. When she discovered a stranger in the bedroom, she was shocked and retreated to the bathroom.

The incident prompted further scrutiny of what had been happening inside the family home.

Police subsequently launched an investigation after receiving notifications about extreme pornography uploaded through a social media account linked to Philip Young.

During a search of the family home, officers reportedly discovered video recordings showing Joanne Young unconscious, restrained and blindfolded while other men engaged in sexual acts. The recordings allegedly captured encounters arranged and filmed by her husband.

Prosecutors told the court that the case centres on whether the defendants genuinely believed Joanne Young had consented to the sexual activity.

The prosecution maintains that the men cannot simply rely on an assumption of consent or on assurances allegedly made by another person without taking reasonable steps to establish whether she was consenting.

The defendants deny the charges against them, and the jury is being asked to consider the evidence presented during the trial.

Philip Young will be sentenced after the conclusion of the trial involving the four other defendants.

The proceedings continue at Winchester Crown Court, where jurors are hearing evidence concerning the alleged assaults and the circumstances in which they took place.

The case raises serious questions about consent, trust and the responsibility of individuals to establish that sexual activity is consensual.

As the trial continues, the jury will consider whether the prosecution has proved the charges against each defendant.
