The First Niger Bridge in Onitsha, which links Anambra State with Asaba in Delta State, is currently undergoing emergency rehabilitation as authorities work to restore the bridge and improve safety for motorists.
The bridge was fully closed to traffic on September 7, 2026, with the Federal Government announcing that the closure is expected to last until September 21. The temporary shutdown was considered necessary to allow repair works to be carried out without regular vehicular movement on the bridge.
What is happening at the bridge?
According to the Federal Ministry of Works, the intervention is addressing the deteriorated carriageway and some bridge components that were affected by vandalism.
The rehabilitation includes the removal of the deteriorated asphalt surface and the laying of a new approximately 40mm asphalt wearing course, alongside other maintenance and safety works.
The project also includes the installation of solar-powered streetlights and CCTV cameras, which are expected to improve visibility and security around the bridge.
Latest progress
As of the latest update from the Federal Ministry of Works, the contractor has mobilised to the site and comprehensive rehabilitation of the First Niger Bridge has commenced.
The ministry also said rehabilitation work is ongoing on the approach road from Summit Junction to the First Niger Bridge, where reinforced concrete pavement is being used.
The Anambra State Government also reported that the Federal Road Safety Corps and other security agencies have been monitoring the rehabilitation area and working on traffic-management measures around the project. Motorists have been urged to follow diversion signs and instructions from traffic-control personnel.
Where should motorists pass?
During the closure, motorists travelling between Anambra and Delta states have been advised to use the Second Niger Bridge through Obosi towards Asaba as an alternative route.
Also Motorists can use Atani Road through Uga Junction towards Harbour Industrial Layout, depending on their destination and the direction of travel.
The diversion is expected to help keep traffic moving while work continues on the First Niger Bridge.
When will the bridge reopen?
The Federal Ministry of Works announced September 21, 2026 as the expected reopening date, meaning the current closure is scheduled to last two weeks.
The rehabilitation is being carried out with the aim of restoring a safer and smoother riding surface while addressing damaged bridge components and improving security infrastructure.
