Stop begging and pampering players to represent Super Eagles — Osaze Odemwingie tells NFF

Former Nigerian international Osaze Odemwingie has advised the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to stop “pampering” and begging foreign-born players of Nigerian descent to represent the Super Eagles.

His comments come as the NFF continues efforts to recruit talents such as Michael Kayode, Tosin Adarabioyo, Caleb Okoli, and Kingsley Ehizibue for the senior national team. Speaking with Brila FM, the former West Bromwich Albion forward stressed that the Super Eagles should be prestigious enough to attract players without excessive persuasion.

“These days, it’s like they want the pampering. Me, as you know, I don’t need any pampering. If Naija pampers me, it’s more than enough for me,” Odemwingie said.

Reflecting on his own journey and mixed heritage, Odemwingie noted that while he has ties to Russia, his footballing identity has always been with Nigeria. He also expressed concern over the loss of Nigerian talent to European nations.

“It’s Nigerian genes that are showing themselves. How will Nigeria win the World Cup when our talents go out to serve other countries?” he asked.

Odemwingie further highlighted the technical differences between players developed locally and those trained in European academies.

“Europeans, regardless of where they are from, are groomed from childhood to be mechanical. They are like robots—wired to play the game tactically and keep things simple,” he said.

He added that he hopes to see a future where top players are eager to choose Nigeria and help bring the World Cup trophy home.
