Cristiano Ronaldo Reportedly Refuses to Play for Saudi Club

The 40-year-old forward, who earns an estimated £488,000 per day, is said to be unhappy with how Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) is managing the club. Al-Nassr are scheduled to face local rivals Al-Riyadh on Monday, but the team could be without their captain, who has scored 18 goals in 22 appearances across all competitions this season.

According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, a source close to the club revealed that Ronaldo is dissatisfied with the way PIF is handling Al-Nassr’s finances, particularly when compared to the support given to rival clubs in the league.

The PIF holds a 75 per cent stake in four Saudi Pro League teams—Al-Nassr, Al-Hilal, Al-Ittihad and Al-Ahli—and has played a central role in attracting global football stars to Saudi Arabia through lucrative contracts.

Following Ronaldo’s high-profile move to Al-Nassr in 2023, several other elite players joined the league, including Karim Benzema at Al-Ittihad, Kalidou Koulibaly at Al-Hilal and Riyad Mahrez at Al-Ahli.

While all four clubs have continued to strengthen their squads, Ronaldo is reportedly frustrated that Al-Nassr have not received the same level of backing in the transfer market. The Portuguese star, who is yet to win a domestic trophy with the club, believes his team has been treated unfairly.

It is claimed that Al-Nassr head coach Jorge Jesus has not been adequately supported with new signings, especially when compared to Al-Hilal, who have been particularly active in the transfer window.

During the January transfer window, Al-Nassr reportedly signed only one player—21-year-old Iraqi midfielder Haydeer Abdulkareem. In contrast, Al-Hilal secured Spanish defender Pablo Marí for £1.7 million, spent £26 million on Rennes forward Kader Meite, and are said to be finalising another £26 million deal for Neom star Saimon Bouabre.
