Operatives of the Bayelsa State Vigilante Service have arrested a suspected serial phone thief, identified only as Francis, at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa — the venue of Governor Douye Diri’s defection ceremony to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The suspect, who allegedly confessed to traveling from Rivers State to take advantage of the large political gathering, was apprehended on Monday, November 3, 2025, after a special tactical squad discreetly monitored his suspicious movements within the crowd.
A search of his bag reportedly uncovered 17 mobile phones, ₦91,000 in cash, and several ATM cards.
According to preliminary statements obtained from Francis, he was working with an accomplice who managed to evade arrest. The suspect further admitted that the duo had already stolen more than ₦400,000 in cash before operatives closed in, claiming that his fugitive partner was carrying additional stolen devices.
The Chairman of the Bayelsa State Vigilante Service, Hon. Doubiye Alagba, who personally led the operation, handed the suspect over to officers of Operation Puff Adder under the Bayelsa State Police Command for further investigation and prosecution.
Alagba warned that criminal elements should steer clear of the state, emphasizing that his team is well-trained in intelligence gathering, behavioral observation, and event surveillance.
“Bayelsa is no safe haven for criminals. Our operatives are vigilant, proactive, and ready to protect lives and property at all times,” Alagba stated.
