Dave Ramsey: “In Marriage, There’s No ‘My Money’ or ‘Your Money’—It’s ‘Our Money’”

American finance expert and radio personality Dave Ramsey has emphasized that in marriage, financial unity is essential, stating that the concept of “my money” and “your money” should not exist between spouses.

In a Facebook post on Valentine’s Day, Ramsey explained that marriage is about unity, and keeping separate bank accounts can lead to distrust, financial conflicts, and a weaker relationship.

“If you’re married, ‘my money’ and ‘your money’ doesn’t exist. It’s ‘our money.’ And that’s the only way to win,” he wrote.

He argued that when couples handle finances separately, they function more like roommates rather than a team, leading to issues such as:

  • Lack of trust
  • Money-related conflicts
  • Hidden spending
  • A weaker marriage

Ramsey noted that couples often keep separate finances due to concerns like different spending habits, a desire for independence, or fears of financial disagreements. However, he believes these are symptoms of deeper relationship issues rather than financial ones.

According to him, marriage is not a 50/50 arrangement but a 100/100 commitment—including finances, decisions, and future planning.

To achieve financial harmony in marriage, Ramsey advised couples to:

  • Combine bank accounts to eliminate financial division.
  • Create a budget together so both partners have a say in financial decisions.
  • Set shared financial goals, whether it’s becoming debt-free, buying a home, or planning for early retirement.
  • Communicate regularly through weekly financial check-ins to avoid surprises.

Ramsey concluded that when couples align financially, they not only strengthen their marriage but also build a more secure and prosperous future together.
