Medeama, the Ghanaian side, secured victory over Remo Stars in a thrilling penalty shootout, propelling them to the next round of the CAF Champions League.
Medeama managed to secure a 1-0 victory against the Nigerian team during the first-leg game held in Ghana. However, Remo Stars retaliated in the return fixture during the preliminary round of the tournament, clinching a matching 1-0 win. This outcome led both teams to a tense showdown, as they prepared to determine the rightful contender to progress to the subsequent phase of Africa’s prestigious club competition.
However, it was Medeama who came out on top, securing a 3-2 victory and leaving the home fans at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State, silenced on that Sunday evening.
Remo’s exit coincides with the elimination of Nigerian champions Enyimba, who have previously won the competition twice.
George Finidi’s team suffered a 4-3 aggregate loss to Libya’s Al Ahli Benghazi. The second leg of the match concluded goalless at Enyimba Stadium in Aba, Abia State.
This marks the first instance since 2015 that the Nigerian champions have been eliminated in the preliminary round of the competition.
In a separate event on Saturday, Bendel Insurance advanced to the next stage of the CAF Confederation Cup. They secured their progress by prevailing over Aso Chlef in a penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw in the two-legged tie.
