Nigeria’s headline inflation rate eased marginally to 15.39 percent in August 2026, down from 15.43 percent recorded in July, according to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The figure represents a 0.04 percentage-point decline from the previous month.
On a month-on-month basis, headline inflation stood at 0.71 percent in August, down from 1.57 percent recorded in July. This indicates that the average price level increased at a slower pace during the month under review.
Food Inflation Declines
Food inflation stood at 19.57 percent year-on-year in August 2026, representing a significant decline from the 25.30 percent recorded in the corresponding period of 2025.
On a month-on-month basis, food inflation fell to 1.02 percent in August, compared with 5.56 percent in July, representing a decline of 4.55 percentage points.
The decline was largely driven by price moderation in several key food items, including palm oil, carrots, pepper, onions, cassava flour, beef, yam flour, water yam, melon (egusi), fresh ginger, fresh fish, Irish potatoes, wheat grain, frozen chicken and turkey meat.
States With the Highest Food Inflation
On a year-on-year basis, Adamawa recorded the highest food inflation rate at 38.85 percent, followed by Zamfara at 37.96 percent and Bayelsa at 36.20 percent.
Meanwhile, Borno, Jigawa and Kebbi recorded the lowest year-on-year food inflation rates at -4.04 percent, -0.23 percent and 3.47 percent, respectively.
On a month-on-month basis, Katsina recorded the highest food inflation rate at 9.48 percent, followed by Rivers at 8.86 percent and Osun at 8.32 percent.
In contrast, Taraba recorded the largest month-on-month decline at -12.42 percent, followed by Borno at -12.15 percent and Bauchi at -8.88 percent.
The latest figures suggest a modest easing in inflationary pressures, particularly in food prices, although the overall cost of living remains elevated for households across the country.
