The growing dispute between football’s two most powerful governing bodies has taken another dramatic turn.
FIFA has accused UEFA of launching a “smear campaign” against FIFA and its president, Gianni Infantino, following a controversial proposal involving private investment in FIFA’s commercial operations.
The latest development came after UEFA went to U.S. courts seeking access to documents and testimony connected to the abandoned investment plan. UEFA says the material could be relevant to possible criminal proceedings in Switzerland.
What started the dispute?
The controversy centres on FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), a proposed commercial company that would have handled commercial and event rights connected to competitions including the World Cup.
The plan reportedly involved selling a 20% stake to private investors for around $4.2 billion.
However, the proposal faced strong opposition from UEFA and other football bodies before FIFA withdrew it in July/August 2026.
UEFA takes the matter to court
UEFA has been seeking documents and testimony from U.S.-based organisations as it considers possible legal action against Infantino and other FIFA officials in Switzerland.
UEFA has questioned aspects of the proposed transaction and alleged that Infantino promoted an undervalued deal that could have benefited him personally.
FIFA has rejected those allegations.
FIFA fights back
In its response to the U.S. court proceedings, FIFA strongly criticised UEFA’s approach.
The world governing body argued that UEFA’s legal applications were essentially part of what it called a “smear campaign” against FIFA’s leadership.
FIFA also questioned UEFA’s ability to seek evidence in the United States for a Swiss criminal proceeding that has not yet been opened by Swiss prosecutors.
A bigger battle for control?
The disagreement is now looking bigger than the failed investment proposal.
FIFA has suggested that UEFA’s opposition could be partly driven by concerns about its influence over world football. FIFA argues that additional investment could help smaller football nations develop their football structures and compete more strongly.
UEFA, however, has raised concerns about FIFA’s governance and the way the proposed commercial structure was pursued.
The dispute comes at a sensitive time for Infantino, with FIFA facing growing debate over leadership and governance ahead of the next presidential election.

What began as a controversial business proposal has now developed into a serious dispute involving FIFA, UEFA, courts in the United States and possible legal proceedings in Switzerland.
