Veteran actor Vincent Pastore, widely recognized for his unforgettable portrayal of Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero in the acclaimed HBO series The Sopranos, has died at the age of 80.
According to his longtime manager, Bob McGowan, Pastore was found at his home on City Island in New York after friends and colleagues were unable to reach him for several days. McGowan said he learned of the actor’s passing from fellow The Sopranos cast member Vincent Curatola while attempting to contact Pastore about a potential acting opportunity.
Remembering the late actor, McGowan described him as a loyal friend and generous person who regularly supported charitable causes.
“He was the most loyal client and he always gave to charity,” McGowan said. “He was the kind of guy who would help anybody, which is rare in my business.”
Pastore built a successful acting career spanning more than four decades. Beginning in the 1980s, he appeared in numerous film and television productions, earning memorable roles in classic films such as Goodfellas and Awakenings, both released in 1990. His rugged appearance and commanding screen presence made him a natural fit for mobster and tough-guy characters.
His career-defining performance came in The Sopranos, where he portrayed Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero, one of Tony Soprano’s closest friends whose shocking storyline became one of the series’ most memorable moments. Pastore appeared in 30 episodes of the groundbreaking crime drama, leaving a lasting impression on audiences around the world.
Born in the Bronx and raised in New Rochelle, New York, Pastore served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War before attending Pace University and eventually pursuing a career in acting.
He is survived by his daughter, Renee Pastore.
Vincent Pastore’s performances helped define one of television’s greatest crime dramas, and his legacy will continue to live on through the memorable characters he brought to life on screen.
