A Texas mayor is calling for the cancellation of Kanye West’s upcoming concert in her city over the rapper’s past antisemitic remarks.
San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones urged organizers to cancel West’s scheduled July 4 performance at the Alamodome, making her position known in a post on social media platform X.
“I support canceling the @kanyewest concert,” Jones, 45, wrote on Saturday. “Military City USA should not host someone with a record of hate speech and antisemitic comments in a city-funded facility like our Alamodome—not ever, and certainly not on July 4th, our Nation’s 250th birthday.”
She added: “Standing up to antisemitism is exactly what it takes to achieve a more perfect Union.”
The planned performance is the latest in a series of controversies surrounding West’s recent tour, which has faced backlash due to his history of antisemitic statements. The rapper has previously drawn criticism for releasing a song titled “Heil Hitler” and for selling a T-shirt bearing a swastika on his website.
During the European leg of his tour, the UK government barred West from entering the country because of his remarks. His visa was reportedly revoked in April on the grounds that his presence would “not be conducive to the public good,” leading to the cancellation of planned appearances, including at London’s Wireless Festival.
In Switzerland, football club FC Basel cancelled a concert scheduled for June, stating: “After thorough review, we have decided not to proceed with the project, as we cannot, in accordance with our values, provide a platform for the artist in question within this context.”
West was also due to perform in Chorzów, Poland, which would have marked his first concert in the country in 15 years. However, the venue announced in April that the event would not go ahead, citing “formal and legal reasons.”
