An 85-year-old community leader, Hon. Reuben Owie, has been shot dead by suspected gunmen in Benin City, Edo State.
Owie, who served as the Secretary of Iyowa Community, was reportedly attacked by two unidentified assailants at his residence in Iguosa, near Okhungun, Benin City.
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident on Saturday, August 8, 2026, through its spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem.
According to the police, the victim’s son, Osayomwanbo Owie, reported the incident after the attack on his father at their residence at No. 2 Abu Street, Iguosa, off Okhunhun Road, Benin City.
The police said the incident occurred at about 8:15 p.m. on August 2, when two unidentified gunmen reportedly gained access to the residence and attacked the elderly community leader.
“One of the assailants reportedly shot the victim in the head, resulting in his death,” Ikoedem said.
Following the report, police officers visited the scene, documented the incident and recovered relevant evidence as part of their investigation.
The police spokesperson said efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killing.
She added that Owie’s remains had been taken to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
The motive behind the attack remains unclear as police continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the community leader’s death.
