U.S. Vice President JD Vance says his wife, Usha Vance, has never measured his value by his career accomplishments or public status. Instead, he says, she has always cared more about the kind of person he would become.
In a preview of a Fox News interview scheduled to air Saturday, August 8, Vance discussed his marriage, his role as a husband and father, and the personal journey that eventually led him back to Christianity.
According to Vance, Usha was never focused on whether he reached the highest levels of professional success. Whether he became a prominent author, successful businessman, or even vice president was not what mattered most to her.
“My wife didn’t care whether I was super successful, whether I became the vice president or a best-selling author or successful in business,” Vance said.
Instead, he said, she wanted something much more personal.
“She just wanted me to be a good man.”
Vance said that expectation also influenced the way he viewed his own responsibilities as their relationship grew. Beyond professional ambitions, he wanted to become the kind of husband and father his family could depend on.
“And I wanted to be a good husband and a good father,” he said.
How Marriage Influenced His Religious Journey
Vance also linked those personal goals to his return to Christianity, saying that his desire to become a better husband and father played an important role in his spiritual journey.
He explained that Christianity eventually gave him an answer to a deeper sense of longing he had experienced for some time.
“And I felt like Christianity answered that yearning better than anything else that I saw in the world,” Vance said.
However, Vance emphasized that his return to Christianity was not an immediate or dramatic change. Instead, he described it as a gradual process that unfolded over time.
“And that really is what led me back, but it was a slow, slow process,” he said.
Usha Vance on Their Different Religious Backgrounds
Usha Vance has previously discussed her husband’s religious journey and how it has affected their relationship. While she has supported him through that process, she has also made clear that her own experience with religion is different.
Usha was raised in a Hindu household. In a previous interview with CBS reporter Robert Costa, she was asked whether JD Vance’s decision to return to Christianity had influenced her own religious beliefs.
She said her upbringing had been stable and that she had not experienced the same desire to search for another faith.
“I grew up in a Hindu household that was a very stable household,” she said. “I have not felt the same need to seek something different that he has.”
Rather than allowing their different religious perspectives to divide them, Usha suggested that faith has become something the couple navigates together.
Vance has previously described spending years searching for something he felt was “rooted” and “stable,” eventually finding those qualities through Christianity.
A Marriage Built Around Family
JD and Usha Vance have been married since 2014 and have four children together. Vance’s comments suggest that, despite the demands of public life and political ambition, his family has remained a significant part of how he views his personal goals.
For Vance, becoming vice president or achieving professional success may have brought major public recognition. But by his own account, the standard that mattered most at home was much simpler: becoming a good husband, father, and man.
