British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation on Monday after serving fewer than two years in office, a tenure marked by a series of policy U-turns and declining public support.
Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, an emotional Starmer fought back tears as he announced his decision.
“Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party,” he said.
Starmer said the process of electing a new Labour Party leader would begin in July. He will remain prime minister until his successor is chosen, with the transition expected to be completed by September.
