Disgraced R&B singer R. Kelly was rushed to the hospital after allegedly suffering a near-fatal overdose from medication administered by prison staff, according to claims made by his attorney.
The 58-year-old singer, currently serving a 30-year sentence for sex trafficking and racketeering at a federal prison in North Carolina, reportedly collapsed in his cell while in solitary confinement. In a new court filing, Kelly’s lawyer, Beau Brindley, alleges that the incident occurred after Kelly was given a high dose of his prescribed anxiety medication.
Brindley claims that on June 10, Kelly was placed in isolation with his medication in his possession. Later that same day, prison staff reportedly entered his cell and administered an additional dose. On June 13, Kelly allegedly felt faint and lost consciousness before being rushed to Duke University Hospital, where he remained under observation for two days.
According to Brindley, the dosage given to Kelly was excessive and potentially lethal. “This was no mistake,” he said. “It was a dose that jeopardized his life and nearly ended it.”
The attorney has filed an emergency motion seeking Kelly’s release, marking his third such request. He argues that Kelly is not safe in prison and references a broader conspiracy involving an alleged assassination plot by prison officials.
The motion alleges that three officials—including a warden and an assistant warden—conspired with an inmate to have Kelly killed. According to the document, inmate Mikeal Glenn Stine, a terminally ill member of the Aryan Brotherhood, was allegedly recruited to carry out the attack.
In a sworn affidavit, Stine claims he was previously instructed by officials to commit multiple violent acts against other inmates. He alleges that in February 2023, he was approached about killing Kelly to help cover up misconduct related to the singer’s prosecution. However, after observing Kelly over several weeks, Stine claims he changed his mind and warned him about the plot.
“I told him the truth,” Stine stated in his declaration. “I told him that I had been sent to kill him. I told him how and by whom. And I told him his life was absolutely in danger.”
Brindley argues that Kelly’s continued imprisonment while allegedly facing targeted threats amounts to cruel and unusual punishment and a violation of his constitutional rights.
“The time is now of the essence,” Brindley wrote. “It is with these breathtaking facts in mind that Mr. Kelly asks this Court for an extraordinary legal remedy: his release from Bureau of Prisons custody.”
