Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision not to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, saying the President’s absence should not be an issue.
Lawal, who is part of Nigeria’s delegation to the UN General Assembly, said Vice President Kashim Shettima is representing the President and will deliver his message at the gathering.
Speaking on the development, Lawal explained that it is normal for a president to delegate responsibilities when circumstances make personal attendance difficult.
According to him, there is a reason Tinubu could not attend the UNGA, and the Vice President has been assigned to represent him.
“The message is still the president’s message that the VP is going to deliver,” Lawal said.
The governor also urged Nigerians to give the President the benefit of the doubt, stressing that Shettima’s presence at the international gathering ensures that Nigeria is represented.
President Tinubu mandated Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st UN General Assembly.
The delegation includes Governor Dauda Lawal, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, ministers and other senior government officials. Shettima is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement and participate in high-level and bilateral meetings during the UNGA week.
The Federal Government has also said Tinubu is currently on annual leave and that his decision to delegate the assignment to the Vice President does not diminish Nigeria’s diplomatic representation.
Tinubu’s Absence Draws Questions
Tinubu’s absence has nevertheless generated public debate because this is the third consecutive UN General Assembly he has not personally attended since 2024.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has questioned the repeated absence and called for an explanation, arguing that presidential participation in UNGA provides opportunities for direct diplomatic and economic engagements.
The Nigerian government, however, maintains that the country remains fully represented through the Vice President and other senior officials.
As the 81st UN General Assembly continues, Nigeria’s delegation is expected to participate in discussions and meetings covering issues including economic development, security, climate action and international cooperation.
