Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has told US President Donald Trump that Iran will not surrender to pressure, sanctions or threats, declaring that the Iranian people will “never bow our head or bend at the knee.”
Pezeshkian made the statement while addressing the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, September 23.
His speech came a day after Trump told world leaders that he was considering whether to continue pursuing diplomacy with Iran or take further military action, while also saying that renewed talks between US and Iranian negotiators were taking place.
‘We Will Never Bend at the Knee’
Speaking at the UN, Pezeshkian said pressure from Washington would not force Iran to abandon its position.
He said the resistance of the Iranian people would increase in response to sanctions, increased pressure and what he described as bullying.
“We will never bow our head or bend at the knee,” Pezeshkian said.
The Iranian president also said Tehran remained open to dialogue and negotiations, but rejected negotiations conducted under what he described as the “language of force.”
Pezeshkian Accuses US of Attacks
During the speech, Pezeshkian accused the United States of terrorism and said Iran had been the victim of attacks.
He displayed photographs connected to deaths and destruction in Iran, including an image of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, whom he said was killed during the conflict. These claims were part of Pezeshkian’s address and represent the Iranian government’s position.
The US has maintained that Iran’s nuclear programme and regional activities pose security concerns. Trump has said Iran must not obtain a nuclear weapon.
Iran Says It Is Open to Diplomacy
Despite his strong criticism of Washington, Pezeshkian said Iran was prepared for diplomacy.
He said Iran was ready for dialogue and negotiations but would not accept pressure as a condition for talks. Reports also indicate that US and Iranian officials have been communicating through intermediaries during the UN meetings.
The confrontation between Washington and Tehran remains a major focus of this year’s UN General Assembly, with diplomatic efforts continuing alongside the exchange of strong statements from both governments.
