The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested a 31-year-old man identified as Buriba Israel over alleged cyberbullying and criminal intimidation of First-Class Chiefs of the Numan Federation through his Facebook account, Buriba Israel.
According to a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, SP Suleiman Nguroje, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly created and circulated social media posts containing accusations against the traditional rulers.
Nguroje said the publications were considered offensive and disparaging, and were allegedly capable of undermining the reputation and dignity of the traditional rulers.
He said the suspect was arrested following a formal complaint and a subsequent police investigation into his alleged online activities.
The police spokesperson added that relevant electronic devices and other materials linked to the alleged offences had been recovered and were undergoing forensic examination as the investigation continued.
Nguroje noted that while citizens have the right to freedom of expression, such rights must be exercised responsibly and within the confines of the law.
He warned that the use of social media to harass, threaten, intimidate, defame or deliberately circulate harmful content against individuals or institutions would not be tolerated.
The Commissioner of Police, Adamawa State Command, CP Kabir Umar Hassan, has directed that the case be thoroughly investigated and that the suspect face the full weight of the law if found culpable.
