The death toll from the devastating fire at the 25-storey Greater Nigeria Insurance (GNI) House on Lagos Island has risen to six, Lagos State’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, has confirmed.
According to the update, 13 people were injured in the blaze. Eight males, including a firefighter, were hospitalized, while five others—three males and two females—suffered minor injuries and received first aid at the scene.
Omotoso added that one adult female was recovered dead from the collapsed structure and handed over to her husband. Two adult males were also extricated, and tragically, three people were burnt beyond recognition.
The fire, which broke out on December 24 on the building’s fourth floor, quickly spread, destroying goods worth millions of naira and displacing traders who operated in the building. Emergency services continue to manage the aftermath as investigations into the cause of the fire proceed.
