Spain midfielder Dani Olmo has publicly dismissed an apology from Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala following their heated confrontation after the World Cup final, accusing the former defender of misrepresenting what happened.

Ayala later attempted to play down the confrontation, insisting it was “more of a shove than a punch.” He claimed his reaction came after comments made by Olmo and Eric Garcia and said he regretted the incident, adding that he hoped to apologize to Olmo in person if they met again.
However, Olmo has firmly rejected that explanation.
Speaking to Spanish newspaper Diari de Terrassa, the Barcelona midfielder said an apology carries little meaning when it is accompanied by excuses.
“He is lying because I didn’t say anything to him,” Olmo said. “Someone who apologizes while trying to justify what happened is not truly taking responsibility.”
Olmo added that footballers and coaches have a duty to set the right example, especially for young supporters watching around the world.
“When my family, my children and the fans watch us, I want them to be proud of the way we compete, the way we win and, above all, the way we behave,” he said. “Football has enormous influence, and that comes with great responsibility.”
Ayala, meanwhile, acknowledged that he had acted improperly and admitted he should not have allowed emotions to get the better of him.
“Given my role, I can’t let my feelings dictate my actions,” Ayala said. “It was more of a shove than a punch. It was a reaction in the moment, but if I see him again, I will apologize to him personally.”
FIFA’s investigation into the events remains ongoing, and Argentina could face disciplinary measures if the governing body concludes that the team’s players and staff failed to maintain proper conduct after the final whistle.
