Former Netherlands captain Mark van Bommel is set to become the next head coach of Belgium after reaching an agreement with the Belgian Football Association.
The 48-year-old is expected to replace Rudi Garcia, whose tenure is reportedly coming to an end following Belgium’s run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Although the contracts have not yet been officially signed, all parties are said to have agreed on the terms, with a formal announcement expected once the paperwork is finalized.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the news, posting: “Mark van Bommel as new Belgium head coach, here we go! Deal in place until June 2028 for van Bommel, ready to replace Rudi Garcia.”
The appointment marks Van Bommel’s first job in international football after building an impressive coaching résumé at club level. Since retiring as a player, he has managed PSV Eindhoven, VfL Wolfsburg, and Royal Antwerp. His most notable achievement came at Antwerp, where he led the club to a historic Belgian league and cup double during the 2022–23 campaign.
Belgium’s journey at the 2026 FIFA World Cup ended in the quarter-finals, where they were knocked out by Spain. Van Bommel will now be tasked with leading the Red Devils into a new era as they prepare for upcoming international competitions.
