The Ambassador of Nigeria to South Africa, Temitope Ajayi, has said that recent xenophobic attacks against Nigerians and other foreign nationals in South Africa have been brought under control.

Speaking in an interview with Channels Television on the morning of April 27, Ajayi stated that Nigerians are not currently under siege in the country. He added that authorities in both nations are working to ensure such incidents do not recur.

“Right now, Nigerians are not under siege in South Africa. The situation is currently under control. The two governments are working on it. The priority is to ensure the safety and wellbeing of every citizen, including foreigners,” he said.

Ajayi described the recent attacks on foreigners, including Nigerians, as “isolated tensions.”

“What we are seeing now are isolated tensions, which is why we are calling for caution. In terms of direct attacks or a siege on Nigerians, that is not taking place at the moment. There have been concerns about foreigners being targeted, but the government has issued a statement cautioning against such actions and xenophobic practices,” he added.

He noted that the situation remains relatively calm in Pretoria and Johannesburg.

“I am in Pretoria right now, and the situation is relatively calm. The same applies to Johannesburg. The incidents recorded earlier were isolated cases in KwaZulu-Natal, particularly in Durban, which were contained and prompted a swift response from the government,” Ajayi said.
