The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against Harvard University, alleging the university failed to protect Jewish and Israeli students and seeking to recover billions of dollars in taxpayer funds.

In a complaint filed in federal court in Boston, the U.S. Department of Justice accused Harvard of being deliberately indifferent to hostility on campus and of failing to enforce its policies when the victims were Jewish or Israeli.

According to the complaint, this conduct sent a message to affected students that they were being intentionally excluded and denied equal access to educational opportunities. Harvard did not immediately respond to the lawsuit.

The legal action comes less than two months after the administration reportedly sought a financial settlement from the university, with demands previously reported to have reached as high as $1 billion.

It also follows a separate lawsuit filed in February, in which the government accused Harvard of failing to comply with a federal investigation and sought documents related to whether the university considered race in its admissions process.
