An Israeli minister was suspended from government meetings “until further notice” on Sunday, as stated by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office. This suspension came after the minister suggested in an interview the possibility of using a nuclear bomb on Gaza.
Heritage Minister Amichay Eliyahu, an ultranationalist politician within Netanyahu’s ruling coalition, expressed dissatisfaction with Israel’s retaliation in the Palestinian territory following a Hamas attack on October 7 inside southern Israel. The attack resulted in the deaths of 1,400 people, predominantly civilians, according to Israeli officials.
Israel’s military campaign in Gaza since October 7 has claimed the lives of 9,488 people, with the majority being women and children, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
When asked by the interviewer if he advocated using “some kind of atomic bomb” on the Gaza Strip to target everyone, Eliyahu replied, “That’s one option.”
In response, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office characterized the minister’s remarks as “disconnected from reality” and emphasized Israel’s efforts to spare non-combatants in Gaza.
Subsequently, following the outcry over his remarks, Eliyahu clarified in a post on social media that his statement about the atomic bomb was “metaphorical.”
It’s worth noting that Israel has never officially acknowledged possessing nuclear weapons.
