Nine individuals tragically lost their lives, while approximately 20 others remain trapped in northeastern Mexico following a devastating incident on Sunday, October 1st. During a church service, the roof of Ciudad Madero’s Santa Cruz church suddenly collapsed, leading to this catastrophic event.
Local media outlets reported that a total of 49 individuals were rushed to nearby hospitals in the wake of the roof collapse. Authorities in the coastal state of Tamaulipas have indicated that approximately 100 people were attending a mass when this tragic incident occurred.
“A number of children are believed to be among those trapped, and rescue efforts are currently underway.
Local media reports indicate that at least 20 people are still missing under the rubble. Tragically, the incident occurred during a baptism celebration when the ceiling collapsed.
According to a government statement, the incident took place in the early afternoon.
In images broadcast on Milenio Television, dozens of individuals can be seen attempting to support a portion of the collapsed structure with poles, while others are navigating through the wreckage in a quest to locate survivors.”
“During a solemn moment, our community faced a challenging situation as the roof of a church collapsed while we were celebrating the Eucharist,” shared Bishop Jose Armando Alvarez of the local diocese in a video posted on social media.
Local journalist Franc Contreras, speaking on the BBC World Service’s Newsday program, described how this unfortunate incident occurred during a pivotal moment in the church service.
“The church was filled with approximately a hundred people, and individuals were queued up to receive communion – a pivotal moment in the Catholic mass. Suddenly, the roof collapsed, showering them with bricks, concrete, and steel support structures.”
“Authorities requested silence from the onlookers at the scene, enabling them to listen for any cries for help from those possibly trapped inside.”
