Troost-Ekong Warns Super Eagles: Nigeria Cannot Rely on Talent Alone

Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has warned that Nigeria cannot continue to depend solely on the individual talent available in the national team.

The former defender believes the Super Eagles need a stronger structure, consistency and proper planning if Nigeria wants to compete successfully at the highest level of African football.

Troost-Ekong made the comments while speaking as a football analyst on beIN Sports, following Nigeria’s recent struggles in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.

Troost-Ekong Calls for Consistency

According to the former Super Eagles captain, consistency is needed from the top of Nigerian football down to the players.

He said the country has an abundance of talented footballers, but talent alone cannot solve the problems facing the national team.

Troost-Ekong stressed the importance of having stability within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the coaching team and the squad.

He believes a consistent system would give the players a better environment to perform and help Nigeria get the best out of its available talent.

‘We Can’t Just Rely on Talent Alone’

Troost-Ekong explained that Nigeria has managed to overcome some weaknesses in the past because of the quality of individual players.

However, he warned that those weaknesses could eventually become exposed as other African teams continue to improve.

The former captain said the Super Eagles need the right structure and a strong backbone around the team rather than relying on talented players to solve problems on the pitch.

His comments come at a difficult period for Nigeria, particularly after the team’s mixed start to the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.

Troost-Ekong Backs Eric Chelle

Despite his concerns, Troost-Ekong expressed support for the decision to give Eric Chelle a long-term role with the Super Eagles.

He described the appointment as a positive step and noted that Chelle is also involved with Nigeria’s Olympic team.

According to Troost-Ekong, having the coach work with both the senior and Olympic teams could help create a better pathway for young Nigerian players coming through.

He also pointed to the emergence of young players who have made an impression with the national team as a positive development.

Nigeria Must Take Qualifiers Seriously

Troost-Ekong also called on Nigeria to approach its qualifying matches with greater consistency and seriousness.

The Super Eagles currently face a challenging AFCON qualifying campaign after recording a narrow victory over Madagascar before suffering a 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau.

The result against Guinea-Bissau increased pressure on the team and highlighted some of the concerns surrounding Nigeria’s current setup.

Troost-Ekong believes Nigeria must give itself the best possible opportunity to win by creating the right structure around the team.

He expressed hope that Chelle can bring consistency to the Super Eagles and help the team produce better results in upcoming matches.

What This Means for the Super Eagles

Nigeria remains blessed with talented footballers playing at home and abroad, but the former captain’s message is that individual quality must be supported by good organisation.

For the Super Eagles to return to their best, Nigeria will need more than talented players. Strong preparation, tactical discipline, continuity and proper support for the coaching team will also be important.

As African football continues to become increasingly competitive, Nigeria will have to find a way to turn its abundance of talent into consistent team performances.

For Troost-Ekong, the message is clear: talent is important, but talent alone is not enough.

The Super Eagles have no shortage of quality players. The bigger question is whether Nigeria can build the structure and consistency needed to turn that talent into results.

With important qualifiers ahead, the team will have another opportunity to show whether the lessons from recent setbacks have been taken seriously.
